Big Decision

By | September 5, 2011

You know those people who collect random stuff? Like, I don’t know, ceramic frogs, or spoons, or tiny people. As in, figurines tiny people.

But just like random crap that one day you decide you love and then for the rest of your life you’re stuck with. Every Christmas, birthday, or road trip someone buys it for you and you add it to the stash.

Soon, that stash becomes massive and then it’s just weird. Why did you like frogs, anyway? Don’t you know you’re hoarding frogs?? You really wanna be the Frog Lady??? Well, guess what? Now you ARE the Frog Lady.

I wonder what happens when they decide they just don’t want to be the Frog Lady anymore. Or the Porcelain Doll Lady, or the Train Guy, or the Tiny Salt and Pepper Shaker Person.

What do you do? Just throw it all away? Give it back? Take it to Rick Harrison and hope that it’s worthy enough for his pawn shop? Pray that your kids don’t turn you in for an episode of Hoarders?

It’s quite the decision, really. But…can I confess something?

I kinda want to be The Owl Lady.

I have recently fallen in love with owls. And yes, I realize I’m not the first. I know it’s trendy. What can I say? I’m a follower.

Big Decision

I have a whole board devoted to it on Pinterest called My Owl Obsession.

And I know what’s gonna happen. I know that this Christmas, I’m getting an owl. I don’t know who is gonna buy it. I don’t know what it will look like. I just hope that there isn’t a misunderstanding. PLEASE  JUST DON’T GIVE ME A REAL OWL!!! I would be so freaked out…

Weird digression there, wouldn’t you say? Let’s move on.

As I was saying, I’m at a crossroads. Do I continue this relationship, or just cut it off? Do I really want to be the Owl Lady? Will they eventually creep me out? Do I like that their eyes are so very big? After all, I am scared of the real creature. They’re not nearly as cute as the ones at Pottery Barn.

Big Decision

Decisions, decisions.

What about you? What are you obsessed with these days? Are you willing to become the “fill-in-the-blank” Lady or Guy?

Details, Lois! Details! (extra points if you know what that reference is from. No! Don’t google it!)

Big Decision
From Anthro, of course.

You know, I’m actually pretty creeped out by porcelain dolls. I collected them between the ages of 10-12, and my grandma bought me one that wound up and would move and sing. One night, when I was in junior high–my best friend and I were up late chatting. All of a sudden, up on my shelf, the doll started moving and the creepy little song came out. Oh my gosh. I can still remember the horror of that moment. We screamed, grabbed the thing, and ran outside to the trash. That ended my dabbling in porcelain dolls.

When I was younger I collected trolls. And then pigs. And now? Much to my husband’s dismay it’s houses. Miniature houses. For Halloween and Christmas. I make a YUGE giant display that takes me three days to put up. I have so many houses we have no room in our garage for anything other than houses, and all the accessories, of course.

when i was a kid, i visited a friend’s grandmother’s house, and she was the ULTIMATE porcelain doll lady. hundreds of them, everywhere. i was about 7, so naturally i wanted to become the porcelain doll lady too. i now have about 10 dusty, chipped porcelain dolls in a box in the basement, and i have NO idea what i’m going to do with them. :0/

Pigs? Hmm. Like owls, not the cutest creatures in “real life.” So do you still have a collection?

I have a thing for serving platters shaped like (or decorated with) fish. Which is especially weird, because I don’t eat, or even cook, fish!

This is hilarious! I was the……wait for it…..pig girl in high school. Don’t know why but I loved me some pigs. Not really into ham or bacon, but a little ceramic pink pig, oh yes. Weird. Glad I outgrew it. Although, I may have a couple of pig photos pinned on a Pinterest board.

The real owl looks like Stinky. I was the tic-tac box little girl, only because I wanted to collect perfume bottles like you did, but I couldn’t say that I was copying you. haha.

Recipes. That’s my obsession. I have a binder FILLED with recipes. I’ve been checking out recipe books from the library and photocopying them. It’s getting sick, because even if every meal I cooked every day was one of these recipes, I don’t think I could use them all in my lifetime. It’s bad. At least owls are way cute (I even think the real ones are neat looking).
