I can think of a million reasons why I don’t want to be an adult. Sometimes I cringe at the weight of utter responsibility that encircles my life. And I’m not even some fancy career woman. I don’t have meetings or deadlines or reports to give.
But I do have breakfast to make, butts to wipe, laundry to wash, bills to pay, timeouts to give, a kitchen to clean and the list goes on and on. I also have less menial responsibilities like finishing that blasted thesis and figuring out what I want to do with my life. Oh wait, I’m already doing it.
Being an adult is serious business. You have to think about crap like vaccinations and root canals and Ferberizing versus Faulkerizing. So. Much. Responsibility.
But when I was a kid, and from what I observe in other children, it appears that being an adult is the end goal for all little ones. At least its the inevitable end. My girl plays at being mommy, going to the grocery store, and even planning imaginary baby showers. So my life must look somewhat glamorous to her if she wants to mimic it in her spare time, right?
Here are the six best things about being an adult, according to my daughter. I got inside her weird little head and figured out why she wants to be me when she grows up.
1.) Adults get to drink coffee without shame. They don’t have to sneak it off the counter and then covertly sip it underneath the table. What a concept.
2.) Adults get to go to bed whenever they want to. And they get to show off their power by sending everyone else to bed whenever they want to.
3.) Adults know everything. They’re all wise and all knowing. And if for some strange reason they don’t know the answer, they “Google” it.
4.) Adults get to have privacy. No one ever pesters them about whether or not they need to go poop. And no one sneaks up on them when they’re doing perfectly good things like making a mud pie or swiping chocolate chips from the freezer. Privacy, people.
5.) Adults get to chew gum. That just might be the best thing about being a grown up.
6.) Adults get to really get married, really have babies, really play house, and really be in charge of everything. They get to have something called Utter Responsibility.

“Having AWESOME kids….All four of you!!! and the love of my grandbabies….
love ya Mimi…..
Love this. I would have to add that when I was her age — driving a car was at the top of my list why adults have it made. Going to bed whenever would have been a close second.
